Welcome Message from Assistant Principal – Curriculum

[vc_row][vc_column width=”5/6″][vc_column_text el_class=”list_type”]It has been a great opportunity to be a founding member of Al Salam Community School. At Al Salam Community School, every lesson is planned with the needs of every learner in mind. Learning is engaging, rich and informed by up to date educational practices and theories. Learning is based on choice and the innate interests of all learners. This is further illustrated by our creative use of free zone areas. Our free zone areas allow students to embed learning by utilizing stations with relevant subject materials from each lesson. Learners are free to explore, choose and build on what they have learned. This makes for happy and engaged students who take responsibility for their own learning.

Our focus is not only on the academic development of learners, but also the overall wellbeing of each learner. Focusing on social and emotional growth equips learners with the right tools to tackle obstacles, become resilient members of the community and conscientious global citizens.

Our dedication to each student and passion for teaching and learning means that the needs of every child is met. At Al Salam Community School, ‘Where Every Child is Special’ is a true reflection of the value and commitment we give to every child.

We have demonstrated great resilience and perseverance in ensuring that we provide the best platform for learning. We credit this to an amazing team of teachers and leaders who have rallied behind our school motto of ASCS being ‘Where Every Child is Special’. Now more than ever, this holds true. Over the months, we have meticulously planned and successfully carried out teaching and learning on a virtual scale. The education of our valued learners has not been impeded, best practice in the classroom has now shifted to best practice online.

At Al Salam Community School, we believe that learning does not start and stop in the classroom, and this has enabled us to thrive on the virtual learning platform. We are able to successfully meet the needs of our learners and demonstrate to parents, families and the community that learners can still get the best quality education and continue their learning journey without impediment.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, the curriculum is built upon seamlessly by a rigorous, balanced and creative thematic approach. The curriculum, which is based on the National Curriculum for England, uses the same thematic approach as the Foundation Stage and therefore offers a subtle transition from FS to Key Stage 1.

The learning objectives are designed by the staff at ASCS into student-friendly Success Criteria (SC) so that students know what is expected of them. Students progress and attainment is measured upon these success criteria that are joined across subjects and portrayed by students via a Learning Showcase Project (LSP) twice a term.

Key Stage 1 students will have an opportunity to engage in student choice, creative thinking and independent learning opportunities through the enrichment programme.

We continue to use the Read-Write-Inc. phonics programme. Phonics sessions are taught in a fun, kinaesthetic way appropriate to the child’s age and ability and children have extensive opportunities to use sounds to read and write independently, where possible. All pupils are assessed on their phonics development and are consistently monitored.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][vc_single_image image=”3470″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=”.vc_custom_1629955415054{margin-bottom: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column_text]Oleveia Milne
